How To Apply For a Marriage License
Apply in person at:

- Arrange for a wedding ceremony and date.
- Fill out the application form from this page. (English) (Spanish)
- At least one applicant must apply in person.
- $20 fee for residents, $30 for out-of-state applicants, payable with application, cash or check only.
- You may marry at age 16 or 17 with parental or guardian consent (who must be present to sign consent form).
- Proof of age required for both applicants. Bring in a birth certificate (recommended), driver's license, state ID or passport. (Documents must be in English.)
- Michigan residents must apply in the county in which one of the applicants resides. License may be used in any county in Michigan. (Verification of county residency may be required.)
- Out-of-state applicants apply in the county in which they will be married.
Picking up License
- Applicant may pick up license at the Clerk's office 3 days after application.
- License is valid for 33 days from, and including, date of application.
After January 1, 2007
- Social Security numbers required for both parties (or legal reason why none.)
- Bride & groom must sign marriage license after ceremony
- Witness must be 18 or older

Ministers, priest, rabbis, certain judges. etc, may perform marriage ceremonies in Michigan. Make sure to find out if the person performing your wedding ceremony requires counseling prior to the ceremony. To obtain information on judges and magistrates in other Michigan counties, contact the County Clerk for the specific county.
Note: If the ceremony will be performed in English, then both parties must understand English.
